Photoshop Handout Example
April 29, 2026Illustrator Lesson Plan Example
April 29, 2026Title of lesson: Fun with Photoshop
Intended audience Art, Grades 9-12, Approx 8-12 Students, Computer Classroom
Estimated time frame 1 - 41 Minute Class
Materials
- computers with Internet access
- digital camera with memory card
- Photoshop
- solid color backdrop
- handout with instructions on how to produce both techniques
Readiness: Students will need to know the school's policy on internet usage. They will need to have their pictures taken in class beforehand. They will also be instructed to bring in a flash drive if they wish to save their work.
Curriculum frameworks
- Use color, line, texture, shape, and form in 2D work, and identify the use of these elements in others' compositions by using their names for line and shape, using their chosen images for texture and color, and creating unique brushes that reestablish form.
- Create 2D images that are original, convey a distinct point of view, and communicate ideas by creating an original design using their own name, visuals important to them, and designing brushes that represent themselves.
- Demonstrate the ability to develop an idea through multiple stages, responding to criticism and self-assessment, each student will create a brush, type their name and choose a font that suits them and choose images to then place into the name for a fun effect. The student will then evaluate each other’s work in a productive critique on technique only; the content is self-satisfying.
Objectives
“By the end of this lesson, all section G students will learn two techniques, creating a brush and placing an image inside text, in Photoshop by presentation, a handout with the steps, and group practice, enabling them to be able to reproduce the technique whenever they want.”
Assessment
The student is able to replicate the techniques demonstrated, either by memory or utilization of the handout provided. The student will be assessed on whether they completed the work; as this is an introductory lesson, more emphasis will be placed on following the instructions than on the piece's creativity. I will use a check-off list to ensure each element is included in the design for grading.
Sponge activity: Any student who finishes early is encouraged to try other tools in Photoshop; my suggestion is to experiment with the Filter Gallery on their chosen images and brushes to see different effects. I would explain where and how to use it.
Alternate plan: Students may use an image from the internet if they do not wish to use their own for the brush. They may also use another’s name instead of their own.
Modifications for diverse learners: The lesson is brief to allow more time for me to work with the students one-on-one, if needed. The handout will help self-sufficient students, while I help those in need.
Teaching
-
Step/Activity 1 anticipated time: 6 mins
Anticipatory set As the students enter the room I will give each of them the handout for the day. Once they are seated, I will instruct them to choose images from the internet that they want to use for their name and brush technique. While they search for images, I will briefly explain the concept of each technique.
-
Step/Activity 2 anticipated time: 5 mins
Introduction: Once the students have all their desired images, I will have the students create their own brushes with me at the same time. If anyone is having difficulty, I will ask if another student can help them. If not, I will assist them in producing the brush.
-
Step/Activity 3-? anticipated time: 15 mins
Next, I will have the students type out their name with me and choose a bold font they find appealing. I will check around the room to make sure everyone is on point before continuing with the lesson. Once they have their names set, we will continue with the technique of placing an image within the letters. For the sake of time, we will use one large image for the entire name, but instructions will be provided in the handout on how to place an image in each letter. Halfway through the lesson, I will check that everyone is still with me before finishing.
-
Next to last Step/Activity anticipated time: 10 mins
Once the two techniques are complete, I will show the students where to go to play around with images by using the Filter Gallery tool. I will answer any questions students might have and allow them time to experiment with the program.
-
Final Step/Activity anticipated time: 5 mins
In the last 5 minutes of class, I will show students how to properly save a Photoshop document and how to save an internet-ready version, so they may share the image with friends and family if they choose to do so.
Post-teaching
Reflection after actual lesson presentation I might pre-select images for students to use if the time calls for it. I might also extend this to a two-period class so the students have more time to experiment with the program.
